Why should I get twitter?

A friend asked me this on Facebook. It took two wall messages to fit it in, but here is my response:

Well…. Since you asked. You are a PR major, and this could be one of your future jobs as people are starting to be hired as social media cordinators. A large role in this job would be to understand new forms of communication like twitter. In a purely educational sense, twitter is a buzzword in pr and marketing circles, so you should check and see what substance exists among the hype.

Celebrities are starting to twitter, which could usher in a new democratic form of marketing. Twitter is the newest thriving social networking space, and it is impacting how people write blogs and how we interact on the Internet. The space is the Wild West of the Internet. Many geeks are using twitter, but it’s becoming more and more common.

And, you have more friends from Nashville and [your home town] then your peers, so you can also take advantage of the many social aspects such as keeping up with me, molly, nicole, leah, david and others in a form of communication that limits your thoughts to 140 characters and therefore sharpens and forces you to become a pithy self-editing socialite.

Plus, you can do things like follow tags like #titans or #nashville or #PR that is not possible on other social sites. It allows you to live tweet among friends and associates so the zeitgeist of the nation or your filtered circle is at your fingertips.

Also Twitter allows you to network and interact with people that normally wouldn’t respond to your email, simply because you are checking out a space that is forward-thinking, and therefore makes you among the trend setters. All a trend setter is someone who tries something before others, then gives a review. I’d love to hear yours and you can let me know where I’m off!! =)

Ok, your turn! Sign up and then follow me and let’s talk on twitter!
