Why is the Internet bad for Journalism?
In our schools we teach journalists to excavate all the angles of a story so the realities of our situations are more evident, but we’ve lost the full story of the Internet.
I’m speaking at the SouthEast Journalism Conference over Valentine’s Day weekend. Yes, the Internet is good for journalism. Innovations in speed, transparency, and community have transformed our society, including journalism.
I’ve been thinking about this for a week or so, but would love your input. Why is the Internet bad for Journalism?
If you totally disagree, I get it. I did too, till I started thinking about it. If you are lost, here is what I’m looking for:
BAD ANSWER “Newspapers are dying.”
False. The Internet is “changing” newspapers.
GOOD ANSWER “The lack of investigatory budgets in traditional media hurts society.”
You could argue blogs have filled in the gap, but we don’t fully fill the gap. People are fighting against this.
What else should we be fighting against as producers and consumers of journalism affected by the Internet?
Please help me see the angles I’m missing and comment below. If this question is hard to answer, it may mean our minds are not trained to trash talk the Interwebz. Let’s be hard on it this time, for our sake.
